Firebirds add Fleming to coaching staff

INDIANAPOLIS â Indiana Firebirds Head Coach Mike Wilpolt made a significant addition to his coaching staff today when he announced that Flint Fleming would come on board as an assistant coach for the remainder of the 2004 season. Fleming, a member of the AFL's 15th Anniversary Team as an offensive/defensive lineman, will help coach the line along with fullbacks and linebackers.
Fleming spent last season as defensive coordinator for the Carolina Cobras. He brings 14 years of Arena Football League experience as a player and coach to Indiana. In 2002, Fleming served as assistant head coach/defensive coordinator for the Columbus Wardogs (af2). He was eventually promoted to head coach and director of football operations before leaving to join the Cobras.
Before moving to the sidelines Fleming established himself as one of the top players in the AFL. During his 12-year career he went to the playoffs 11 times and played in six ArenaBowls, winning three titles (1990, 1992, 1997). The 1992 ArenaBowl Ironman MVP, Fleming still co-holds the league record for sacks in an ArenaBowl game (2.0). During his career he amassed 19.5 sacks and 200 total tackles. Fleming, who became eligible for the AFL Hall of Fame in 2003, scored 16 career touchdowns.
Fleming will assist Firebirds' offensive/defensive line coach Bob Landsee. Landsee returned to the team this week after taking a three-week medical leave to handle a neck injury suffered during his playing days with the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Firebirds host the Georgia Force Saturday night at Conseco Fieldhouse. Kickoff is set for 7:00 PM (EST) and the first 10,000 fans through the gates will receive a 2004 Firebirds' team poster.
