Quick hitters: week seven

March 19, 2004 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I) News Release

LIVING IN A FANTASY: Entering this weekend's games, Austin WR/DB CHARLIE DAVIDSON holds his position as the top player in AFL Fantasy, currently racking up an average of 32.0 fantasy points each week. Moving into the second and third positions are Las Vegas' MARCUS NASH and CLINT DOLEZEL, respectively, who, along with their Gladiators team, face Western Division rival San Jose this Saturday at 10:30 p.m. ET. Last week, Dolezel rushed for a score and passed for 334 yards and eight touchdowns, including four bulls-eyes to Nash (16 rec. for 192 yards).

WHAT A START: Sparked by a 5-1 start, the VooDoo has enjoyed one of the most impressive starts by an AFL expansion team through the first six games of the season. Only the St. Louis Stampede and the New Jersey Red Dogs began their first season as quickly as the VooDoo. The Stampede matched the VooDoo's 5-1 start in 1995, while the Red Dogs compiled an 8-1 start in 1997.

HOLDING ON TO IT: The Los Angeles Avengers are leading the AFL with a +9 turnover ratio. The Avengers have four fumble recoveries and seven interceptions, while losing only two fumbles and QB TONY GRAZIANI has yet to throw an interception (26 TDs and no INTs). The top five teams in turnover ratio – Los Angeles (+9), Chicago (+6), San Jose (+5), Colorado (+5) and Carolina (+4) – have combined for an overall record of 17-10.

NO PICKS, NO SACKS: The Rush is one of only two teams in the AFL that has not thrown an interception this season (Los Angeles). QB RAYMOND PHILYAW has opened the season with 133 consecutive pass attempts without an interception, and dating back to last season, has thrown 159 consecutive passes without being picked off. It marks the first time in team history that the Rush has played five-consecutive games without throwing an interception. In addition, Chicago is the only team in the AFL that has not given up a sack this season. In 2002 the Rush led the AFL, allowing only three sacks. Last season, the Rush ranked No. 5, giving up 12 sacks.

NO CATCH FOR YOU: San Jose WR/LB BARRY WAGNER went without a reception for the first time in his San Jose career when he was kept off the stat sheet against Colorado on March 14. Wagner had caught at least one pass in all 62 games he's played in since joining the team in 2000. In fact, Wagner had at least one reception in his final 49 games with Orlando prior to signing with the SaberCats giving him a streak of 111 consecutive games with a catch prior to the Mar. 14 contest. Despite having his consecutive games streak with a catch snapped, Wagner is still the second player in AFL history to reach THE 900 CLUB. Wags reached the 900-plateau (904) in career catches when he hauled in a season-high six at New York on March. 7. Former Albany/Indiana Firebird EDDIE BROWN remains as the AFL's career leader with Wags close behind.

SEEING RED: The Los Angeles Avengers lead the AFL in Red-Zone Offense with a perfect 21-of-21 (18 touchdowns and three field goals) once they are inside the opponents' 10-yard line. On the other side of the ball, the Detroit Fury buckle down once their opponent is in the Red Zone by allowing only 13-of-19 (68.4 percent) scores inside the 10-yard line.

LIKE, MIKE: With the Indiana Firebirds first win last Sunday at Austin, MIKE WILPOLT earned his first career win as a head coach. Although Wilpolt, with his 1-0 record, now leads all active coaches among career regular-season winning records, Tampa Bay's TIM MARCUM, who owns seven ArenaBowl titles as a head coach, boasts the most regular season wins with 135. Carolina Cobras new head coach, JOHN GREGORY, who replaced EDDIE KHAYAT earlier this week, makes his 2004 debut this Sunday vs. Marcum and Tampa Bay.
