Wilmington Sharks News Release
Fayetteville, NC - After a two hour rain delay, the Wilmington Sharks found themselves down 10-0 after three innings of play in Fayetteville. The Sharks slowly chipped away at the large deficit, but the eight runs in the final six innings were not enough to overcome the early defensive miscues for a final score of 10-8 in favor of the SwampDogs.
Sharks starter Tyler Haswell was struggling on the mound from the get-go. Haswell struck a Fayetteville batter on his first pitch of the night, then allowed a single to David Palenzuela before hitting another SwampDog. With the bases loaded, Cam Stewart knocked a double into the outfield, and two throwing errors on the play would allow Stewart to make his way fully around the bases. Fayetteville would plate ten runs on Haswell, who allowed eight hits, walking one and hitting two.
Wilmington would start their comeback in the top of the fourth. Shawn Sanders was driven home by Cam McRae for his first of two RBIs on the night. Three runs came across in the fifth on five consecutive hits, all coming with two away. Sanders and Moorhouse would pick up RBIs in the inning. After five complete innings, the score was 10-4.
Fayetteville would send three pitchers to the mound in the eighth, where the Sharks continued to nibble and bite away at Fayetteville's lead. Wilmington picked up four more in the frame on a double Jake Kusz, an RBI single by Shawn Sanders, and an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Nate Moorhouse.
Down two runs in the ninth, the Sharks would put runners on the corners after a leadoff single from Sam Foy, but could not advance any further on the threat.
The bullpen efforts from Manore, Wimmer, and Stout would not allow any SwampDogs runs to cross the plate. Manore's two strike outs in three innings of work were followed by Wimmer's three up - three down inning in the seventh, and Stout's two strike outs in the eighth.
The Sharks will enjoy two days off before traveling to the Outer Banks to face the Morehead City Marlins on Monday June 30th.
