Owls Hand Cheek First Loss Of Season

FOREST CITY- The Forest City Owls needed three games to figure out Gastonia's starter Jared Cheek.

Devin Wenzel homered and Hunter Bryant and Derek Hannahs each had an RBI as the Owls defeated the Grizzlies 4-2 Thursday night in Forest City.

Cheek had gone 14 innings, allowing one run on three hits and had 18 strikeouts in his first two starts against the Owls before taking his first loss of the year.

The Owls got on the board quickly after Kyle Prats came home to score on a throwing error in the first inning and got two more runs in the third with a Bryant sac fly and the Wenzel solo shot over the left field wall.

.Hannahs had a two out RBI single in the fourth which gave the Owls a 4-0 lead before the Grizzlies answered in the sixth with two runs of their own.

That's all they would get.

Owls starter Nick Neitzel got his second win of the year and lowered his ERA to 1.74. He threw five innings allowing two runs (no earned) on four hits and struck out three.

Brock Goodling recorded the final five outs and got his fourth save of the year.

The Owls took on the Grizzlies 20 minutes later as part of a double header and were defeated 5-1.

Tomorrow night the Owls will take on the Asheboro Copperheads on Faith and Family Night.

There will be multiple bands performing before the game so come out and enjoy live music before the game gets underway.

Saturday night will be Guns and Hoses night where policeman and firefighters will battle it out in a softball game at 5:00.

The Owls will continue the 2014 season at home Friday night they take on Asheboro at 7:30. Fans can purchase season tickets, ½ season plans and 5-game Fireworks plans by calling the Owls office at 828-245-0000. Key dates for the 2014 season include: Fireworks Games on Saturday July 5th and Saturday August 2nd. Single game tickets are on sale now. The Owls will also take on the Chinese Taipei National team on July 7th.
