Final Weekend for Scorpions

August 25, 2010 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Yuma Scorpions News Release

The Yuma Scorpions will wrap up the home portion of their 2010 schedule this weekend against the Strong Warriors of Maui, the team that beat them by mere percentage points for the first half title in the Golden Baseball League's southern division.

After a doubleheader on Thursday night beginning at 6 p.m. the Scorpions will face Maui at 7 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

This will be the final chance for fans to watch the Scorpions this season and final chance to show minority owner Jim McDermott there is enough support in the market for him to complete the purchase of the team.

Saturday night is Fan Appreciation Night sponsored by First Bank Yuma. All fans in attendance will receive a free game program and the Scorpions 2010 Official Team Photo. Scorpion players will remain on the field after the game and fans will be invited onto the turf for an autograph session.

Fans will also have the chance to win Scorpions autographed bats and baseballs throughout the night.

Also featured Saturday night is the Yuma High School Showdown. Students from Yuma High, Cibola High, San Luis, Kofa, Gila Ridge, San Pascal, Catholic and Antelope Valley have been fundraising for their schools by selling tickets and receiving 50% of the funds. The school with the most fans at the game, by ticket count, will receive an additional $500.00 from Jim McDermott for their sports programs.

And fans may also get to see one of the greatest players in Independent Baseball history retire as a Scorpion. Field Manager Darryl Brinkley, Baseball America Player of the Year in 2007, has been activated by the team and may take one final at bat. That year Brinkley became the first player in Northern League history to hit .400 in a season when he and Scorpions general manager Peter Young were both with the Calgary Vipers.
