Orange County Flyers News Release

FULLERTON, Calif. (August 24, 2010) - The Orange County Flyers used a three-run fifth inning to overtake Na Koa Ikaika Maui and earn Manny Ayala his GBL-record-tying 12th win of the season, a 6-4 victory in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader at Goodwin Field. The Flyers magic number to clinch a playoff spot is down to 2.

The Flyers used a three-run fifth inning to leapfrog Maui. Eric Pringle dropped a pinch-hit bloop single into right field to lead off the inning, and Steve Boggs singled behind him. Derek Perren drove a double to the right-field wall, cashing Pringle and Boggs for the Flyers' first lead of the game. Perren scored on a Julian Benavidez ground ball that Maui shortstop Rex Rundgren threw away.

Manny Ayala picked up his GBL-record-tying 12th win of the season, a record he has held a share of since 2005, improving to 12-0. He allowed four runs and eight hits to Ikaika, striking out two batters and walking one in his 12th start of the season. Ayala matched Maui's Donald Brandt with a league-leading 12th win, as Brandt beat OC in Game 1 of today's doubleheader to improve to 12-0 as well.

Bryan Harris pitched a scoreless sixth inning to get the ball to closer Andre Simpson, who tossed a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the save (12).

Maui struck for two runs in the first inning, as Fehlandt Lentini walkd to lead off the game, and Paul Nishimura singled behind him. Lentini scored on a wild pitch, and Travor Jackson plated Nishimura on a ground out.

Julian Benavidez blasted a solo homerun, his ninth of the year, in the bottom of the second, his fourth homerun in the last five games.

With Maui leading 3-1 after the top of the third, OC's starting pitcher Manny Ayala reached on an error, moved to second base on a Steve Boggs single, and scored on a Derek Perren ground ball. Sergio Pedroza singled to cash Boggs, tying the game, 3-3, after three innings.

The Strong Warriors starting pitcher Gregorio Martinez put his team back in front, 4-3, with an RBI-double in the top of the fourth. Martinez was chased from the game in the Flyers 3-run fifth inning before recording an out. In four innings of work, he allowed six runs off seven hits with a strike out. TJ Macy and Kaimi Mead pitched scoreless innings of relief for Maui.

The Flyers are off Wednesday before hosting the Tijuana Cimarrones in a four-game series starting on Thursday, August 26, the final regular-season home series of the season. The Flyers will travel to Maui for seven-game series beginning August 31.
