Reading Fightin Phils News Release
Zach Eflin (2-0) tossed six shutout innings while Brock Stassi and Art Charles each homered giving the Reading Fightin Phils (1-0) a 3-1 win over the Bowie Baysox (0-1).
Brock Stassi led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a solo home run off Joe Gunkel that gave Reading a 1-0 lead. The home run was Stassi's second home run of the post season.
Eflin left the game after giving up a lead off single to Chance Sisco in the top of the seventh inning as he took a come backer off the mound that hit his leg. He didn't allow a run through six-plus innings as he gave up just five hits with five strikeouts for his second win.
Art Charles hit a solo home run off Gunkel in the bottom of the seventh inning that gave Reading a 2-0 lead. Angelo Mora chased Gunkel out of the game by hitting a double in the following at-bat. Andrew Knapp hit him home with a sacrifice fly off reliever Donnie Hart that gave Reading a 3-0 lead.
Edubray Ramos pitched a scoreless top of the seventh inning. Jimmy Cordero entered the game in the top of the eighth inning and retired the side. He came back out in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn his first postseason save. He gave up a one-out double to Quincy Latimore then walked Chance Sisco. He got Garabez Rosa to fly out to center-field for the second out then gave up a walk to Brandon Snyder. Latimore scored on a wild pitch by Cordero that cut Reading's lead to 3-1.
Cordero struck out Drew Dosch to end the game and preserve the 3-1 win for the Fightin Phils. Cordero earned the save while Gunkel took his first postseason loss.
