Reading Fightin Phils News Release

(Reading, PA) - After a very impressive 6-1 roadtrip in Portland and New Hampshire, the start of the Fightin Phils 9-game homestand on Monday night at FirstEnergy Stadium brought two things: the taste of home cooking and the return of the Erie SeaWolves, who had won six of their last seven series. With an 8-3 mark in the head-to-head matchups coming in, the SeaWolves outhit the Fightins 9-3 in game one but could never find a way to score. Reading's trio of Harold Arauz, Tyler Gilbert, and Jeff Singer combined on a 1-0 shutout, and four double plays backed up Austin Listi's third inning sacrifice fly as the Fightins won for the eighth time in their last nine games.

Arauz went up against SeaWolves starter Sandy Baez, with both pitchers facing the opposition for the fourth time this season. After winning his previous start in Portland last Wednesday, Arauz looked sharp in the early innings as he kept his pitch count much lower than Baez. He left two SeaWolves on base in the second when he struck out Chad Sedio to retire the side. Then in the third, he got a 5-4-3 double play turned by Zach Green and Drew Stankiewicz to end the inning with runners at the corners.

Stankiewicz made things happen when he led off the third with a walk. A single by Jiandido Tromp and a deep flyout from Cornelius Randolph placed runners at the corners with one away. Listi then got a hold of a 3-2 pitch and drove a high flyball to center field for a sacrifice fly and his eighth run batted in as any games for the night's only run.

Baez (1-6) didn't allow another hit over the course of five-and-two-thirds, but Arauz outlasted him because of two more double plays in the fourth and fifth. After making it through six innings for the fifth time in his last six starts, the righthander opened the seventh inning by allowing a single to Jake Rogers and a one-out walk to Sedio. Gilbert took over and got a groundout to push the runners to second and third, and after walking Danny Woodrow on a 3-2 pitch, he induced a flyout to right from Sergio Alcantara to strand the bases loaded.

Singer's only blip came in the eighth with a pair of one out singles from Dominic Ficociello (3-for-3, walk) and Will Maddox. Rogers then lined a 3-1 pitch towards short, where Malquin Canelo stabbed it to double off Ficociello for the fourth double play of the night. Singer cruised into a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his fourth save, giving the Fightin Phils their third shutout win of the season. Deivi Grullon had his eighth two-hit game of the season to extend his hitting streak to seven straight.
