Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

DUBUQUE, Iowa- Following Saturday's game with the Indiana Ice, the Fighting Saints will hold their Annual Team Awards, honoring members of the 2013-13 team for their work on and off the ice. Parents and billet (housing) families of many Fighting Saints players will be in attendance as part of Parents Weekend.

The awards that will be presented on the ice Saturday include the Team MVP Award. Last season Zemgus Girgensons, now in the Buffalo Sabres organization, took home the award. Other awards for on-ice play include Rookie of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and Most Improved Player Award.

The Fighting Saints will also honor one player for their work off the ice with the Community Award, given to an individual who has contributed greatly by attending events in the Tri-State area and representing the Fighting Saints organization with class. A Scholar Athlete Award will also be given to the Fighting Saints player who currently attends high school and has the highest grade point average.

The majority of the awards are voted on by players and awarded to fellow teammates. The exceptions are the Fan's Choice Award, voted on by fans and season ticket holders via Facebook, and the Fighting Saints Award, chosen by the coaching staff.

Players also select a Fan of the Year, given to an individual who has stood out as vocal and supportive among the thousands that pack the Mystique Community Ice Center.

Only three home games remain in the regular season for the Fighting Saints, who have clinched first place in the Eastern Conference. The first 1,000 fans at Friday's 7:35 p.m. game versus the Indiana Ice receive a Fighting Saints Fish Fly Swatter perfect for Dubuquers for what we are calling "Good Fly Day" in honor of Friday's other event. The weekend fun continues Saturday with a Canned Food Drive presented by CenturyLink at 7:05 p.m. Fans can receive $2 off a ticket courtesy of CenturyLink by helping support local food pantries with a non-perishable canned food item. Fans may purchase tickets to both games this weekend in person at the Mystique Community Ice Center, by calling 563.583.6880, or online at DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
