Fighting Saints Sign Defenseman Joey Keane to Tender
April 8, 2015 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, IA-For the second time in less than a week, the Dubuque Fighting Saints have added a key piece to the roster for next season. The club announced today that they have signed defenseman Joey Keane to a tender, and that the Miami (Ohio) commit will join the team for the 2015-2016 season. Keane is Dubuque's final tender, joining forward Baron Thompson who Dubuque signed last week.
"We are very excited to add Joey to our team next season," said Mike Field, Dubuque Fighting Saints Assistant Coach and Director of Scouting. "Like all elite young players, Joey's skating ability and puck skills are extremely strong, but the thing that separates him from other players his age is his Hockey IQ and how competitive he is. With that, we're confident he'll be able to compete for us at a high level as a 16-year-old."
The 1999-born defenseman hails from Homer Glen, IL and is a product of the Chicago Mission program who has produced past Dubuque tenders Seamus Malone and Willie Knierim. Keane was a member of the Mission's Bantam AAA team for two seasons before joining the U16 Midget Minor team this year. In 26 games this season, Keane struck for 4 goals and 7 assists for 11 points from the blue line. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound defenseman also had 30 penalty minutes and helped lead the Mission to a 19-7-0 record. Keane participated in the USA Hockey Select 15 Festival last summer, notching a goal and an assist in 5 games.
"I think Dubuque was the best choice for me to develop my game," said Keane. "From meeting with the coaching staff, it seemed like a perfect fit. It seems like a place where they take good care of their players. The whole facility including the rink, locker rooms and weight room was top notch. It was definitely the place for me."
Under the guidelines of the tender, Keane will be required to dress in a minimum of 55 percent of the Fighting Saints games next season. Additionally, by signing him to a tender, Keane will take the place of Dubuque's second selection in the 2015 USHL Draft-Phase One.
With the tenders of Thompson and Keane, this marks the first year Dubuque has used both of its tenders since 2012 when the club signed Seamus Malone and Keegan Ford. Malone is currently Dubuque's top scorer with 55 points and will skate at the University of Wisconsin next season. Ford will return to Dubuque next year and play along side Thompson and Keane before heading to Michigan Tech for the 2016-2017 season.
Dubuque's final home game of the regular season is this Friday night, April 10 versus the Tri-City Storm. It's Fan Appreciation Night presented by American Trust. The evening will feature a $5,000 giveaway in American Trust's "The Winning Edge" contest, three contestants shooting for a chance to win a lease on a 2015 Ford Mustang from Victory Ford and over 1,000 additional prizes given away all evening long. Tickets are available by calling 563.583.6880 or by visiting DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
