Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
FARGO, North Dakota - Goaltender Brandan Jensen turned aside 39 shots and spoiled the New Year's party for the Dubuque Fighting Saints, leading the Fargo Force to a 4-2 victory Monday night in front of 3,655 fans at the Scheels Arena. Jensen helped the Force kill off a two-minute five-on-three disadvantage in the second period to help earn his 11th win of the season in goal.
With the loss, Dubuque dropped back-to-back contests for the first time this season, and lost its fifth straight road game. The Fighting Saints went 0-for-5 on the powerplay and failed to convert on the man-advantage for the third straight game.
The game was tied 2-2 going into the third period when the Force captured a pair of goals in the game's final frame to earn the win. Matt Pohlkamp tallied his third goal of the season at 4:21. The unassisted goal came on a two-on-one. The forward skated down the left side and roofed a shot over Dubuque goaltender Arthur Brey's glove for the eventual game-winning goal. Fargo mounted numerous chances in the third, and Brey turned aside many of them, including a Nate Arentz penalty shot at 5:20. However Brey couldn't stop Dominic Toninato who split the Dubuque defense and skated in on a breakaway and lifted a backhander of Brey's glove at 12:47 to give the Force a 4-2 lead and insurance.
The Fighting Saints opened the scoring Monday evening just 3:03 into the game. Head Coach and General Manager Jim Montgomery inserted new addition Joe Manno on the right wing on a line with Jarrid Privitera and Shane Sooth, and the move paid dividends. Manno collected the puck along the right wing into the Fargo zone and directed a pass across the ice to Privitera, who tipped the puck into the open net past Force goalie Brendan Jensen for his eighth goal of the season.
The Force tied the game at the 11:19 on a goal from Alex Iafallo. The winger stole an attempted Fighting Saints breakout pass and spun and fired a wrist shot over the glove of Brey.
In the second period, the Force connected on a powerplay goal just 1:39 into the period from Toninato who had a pair of goals in the game. Dubuque would even the score three minutes later at 4:13 as Shane Sooth scored his eighth goal on the season. Sooth converted a three-on-two, one timing a Jeff Taylor pass from the right wing faceoff circle past Jensen to even the score.
With the loss Monday, the Fighting Saints fell to 22-5-2. The Fighting Saints outshot the Force 41-35 in the loss. Fargo was 1-for-2 on the powerplay. Dubuque returns home for a pair of games on Friday, January 4 versus Waterloo in Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup play at 7:35 p.m., and Saturday, January 5 versus Green Bay at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are available for both games by calling 563.583.6880 or online at DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
