Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release
DUBUQUE, Iowa - The Fighting Saints would like to get into the swing of winning trophies prior to the start of the Clark Cup Playoffs. With only four games remaining in the regular season, the Fighting Saints have an opportunity to win the Cowbell Cup when they close out the season series against the Waterloo Black Hawks on Friday night. The Cowbell Cup, in its first season of existence, will be awarded to the team among the Fighting Saints, Waterloo Black Hawks, and Cedar Rapids RoughRiders that finishes first in head-to-head competition between the three teams.
The RoughRiders have been eliminated from Cowbell Cup contention, leaving the Fighting Saints and Black Hawks to determine an inaugural winner of the trophy, a picture of which is attached to this release. If the Fighting Saints win Friday's game, either in regulation or in overtime, they will win the Cup. If the Black Hawks, who are three points behind the Fighting Saints in the Cowbell Cup standings, win in regulation Friday, they will have a chance to win the Cup with a victory over the RoughRiders during the last weekend of the season. A combination of a Black Hawks win and overtime loss over their last two Cowbell Cup games would leave them tied with the Fighting Saints in the final standings.
"The Black Hawks and Rough Riders are our two closest rivals," said Fighting Saints Head Coach Jim Montgomery. "Their fans come to our games, and our fans go to Waterloo and Cedar Rapids in droves when we play there. It's an opportunity for us to stake a claim to being the best team in Eastern Iowa."
The Fighting Saints have played the Black Hawks seven times this season, winning four of the games. The Saints have not lost in Dubuque, and will try to make it four-for-four in the Key City with a win over Waterloo on Friday night. Defenseman Mike Matheson has helped lead the way for Dubuque in the games against Waterloo, scoring five goals and adding an assist in those contests. For the Black Hawks, Vince Hinostroza has stood out against Dubuque with eight points, five of which have come as goals.
Tickets to Friday's game are available by phone at (563) 583-6880 and in person at the Mystique Community Ice Center from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on game night up until the start of the second period. Tickets are available 24 hours a day online at DubuqueFightingSaints.com.
