Fighting Saints Advance! Boeing's Overtime Winner Clinches Series

April 24, 2016 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

DUBUQUE, Iowa "" It came down to one chance. A sharp-angle shot from Brett Boeing late in the first overtime was the golden goal - the series winner for the Fighting Saints in a 2-1 victory over the Green Bay Gamblers on Saturday night at the Mystique Community Ice Center. The Saints won the series 3 games to 1.

After taking the miss from a Spenser Young wrist shot that went wide of the goal, Boeing dangled his way past a defender, and from the left-wing corner, ripped a tricky shot from an angle through a minuscule hole in Adam Huska's stance. The goal came at the 16:55 mark of the overtime.

Up until this game, Boeing was the only forward that hadn't tallied a point in the series. He ended tonight with two points on this night.

That goal followed outrageous save after save from netminder Hunter Miska. He made a superman save on Jason Dhooghe early in the overtime session that bailed out the Fighting Saints at one point. He made another stop on Joey Marooney on a two-on-one. He also slid over to make a key save on Josh Dunne in the overtime after a turnover from Joey Keane, and then Dhooghe on the rebound.

Miska made 37 saves in his first star effort.

All of the scoring in regulation came in the second period of action. Willie Knierim started the scoring for the Fighting Saints on the power play. He directed a Boeing shot from the right circle through the pads of Huska to begin the scoring.

However, off of a turnover minutes later, Andrew Peeke unleashed a shot from the right point that skittered around off Miska and then Andrew Kerr, and into the vacant cage to tie it up.

Each opportunity, each inch of ice, fought for after that point. The third period ended just like the first period - scoreless. It led to the second overtime game of the series.

Green Bay ended the game by outshooting the Fighting Saints 38-27. They finished the season with a 37-16-7 regular season record, and they also finished the season as one of the most dangerous home teams in the USHL.

The Fighting Saints have moved on to the Eastern Conference Final! They will await the winner of the series between the Bloomington Thunder and the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders. Cedar Rapids leads the series 2 games to 1. Stay tuned to DubuqueFightingSaints.com, Facebook and Twitter (@fightingsaints) for updates on the upcoming playoff series.
