Fighting Falcons Set to Return for 2013-14 Season
March 15, 2013 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Port Huron Fighting Falcons News Release
PORT HURON, MI - With the announcement that ticket packages for the 2013-14 NAHL season are up for sale, the Port Huron Fighting Falcons will become the first team to play a fourth season of home games at McMorran Arena since the Port Huron Border Cats of the United Hockey League ceased operations in 2002.
The Fighting Falcons have shown huge improvements since they skated to a 6-46-6 record in their inaugural season in 2010-11. The team won the NAHL's North Division last season, and advancing to the Round Robin stage of the Robertson Cup Finals.
This year's team sits at fifth place in the North Division, battling for one of six playoff spots with seven games remaining in the regular season.
Captain Rick DeRosa signed a college commitment to Penn State University earlier this week, becoming the sixth Fighting Falcons player to make a college commitment this season, the most in the North Division.
Head Coach and General Manager Michael Gershon will continue in his role next season, and looks forward to growing the program.
"Having played here with the Icehawks a few years ago, I know first-hand the level of support this community is capable of, and I am proud to have a chance to continue the strong hockey tradition in this area," said Gershon.
"We obviously still have a lot of goals to reach this season, and getting back into the playoffs is number one on that list," Gershon added. "We've also started our planning for tryout camps and are working on putting our sales team together to go out this summer to look for sponsors and partners. We wouldn't be where we are now without the support of the great sponsors we have in the Blue Water Area."
The Fighting Falcons have made changes to their front office staff, with the additions of Mike Reed and Chris Landrith.
Reed will take over as the Director of Operations and Public Relations. A Port Huron native and 2007 graduate of Western Michigan University, Reed has worked extensively with both the Fighting Falcons and the Port Huron Icehawks, serving as the Media and Public Relations manager for each organization.
Landrith, a Cass City native and 2011 graduate of Saginaw Valley State University has joined the staff as an Account Executive. Landrith will lead the organization's sponsorship sales efforts throughout the off-season, after serving as an intern for the Saginaw Spirit of the Ontario Hockey League earlier this season.
