SOLDOTNA, Alaska - Two first-period goals off loose pucks in the slot were the difference Thursday in the Kenai River Brown Bears' 3-0 victory over the visiting Wenatchee Wild.

Kenai River's Dylan Meier scored the first goal of the game 8:45 into the first period when he picked up a loose puck in the slot and fired a top corner shot into the cage. Jacob Davidson earned the lone assist. The Brown Bears doubled their lead with 6:50 remaining in the first frame when Judd Loewenstein also scored on a loose puck in the slot. Alex Jackstadt and Zack Zulkanycz assisted.

"We didn't' make them work very hard to score goals tonight," said Wenatchee Wild head coach Bliss Littler, "both pucks should have been going the other direction."

Jono Davis (La Verne, Calif.) had a great opportunity to slice Kenai River's lead in half with less than 30 seconds left before the first intermission, but his forehand shot on a breakaway was denied by Evan McCarthy, who made 15 saves in the first period alone.

The Wild had another chance to cut into the Brown Bears' lead during another breakaway with less than nine minute left in the second period, but Trevor Stewart's (East Wenatchee, Wash.) shot rang off the post. The Wild spent the end of the second period killing off a 2-man penalty that carried over into the third stanza.

Wenatchee had another good chance to cut into Kenai River's lead 8:34 into the third period, but Noah Nelson's (Oconomowoc, Wis.) penalty shot couldn't find the net. Matt Seidel went on to tack on an empty-netter for the Brown Bears with 1:19 left in regulation for the 3-0 win.

McCarthy stopped all 36 shots he faced to earn the shout win. Robert Nichols (Dallas, Texas) made 26 saves on 28 shots.

Neither team scored a power-play goal. Wenatchee went 0-for-3 on the power play while Kenai River went 0-for-4.

Game 2 of this weekend's series between the Wild (36-12-6) and Brown Bears is Friday at 8:30 p.m. Game 3, on Saturday, will also begin at 8:30 p.m. Fans can watch both games live for a small fee by logging on to www.FASTHockey.com.
