Fighting Falcons Atop NAHL Standings Following Weekend Sweep
October 14, 2013 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Port Huron Fighting Falcons News Release
PORT HURON, MI - The Port Huron Fighting Falcons remain perfect on home ice this season, following a weekend sweep of the Wenatchee Wild at McMorran Arena. With the wins, the Fighting Falcons have become the first NAHL team to reach 20 points this year.
ÃâÃÂ
Leading scorer Mitch Maloney provided both of Port Huron's goals in a 2-1 win Saturday night. Bryan Yim, Joey Lindberg, Conner Enciso and Nick Horne each added an assist in the win.
ÃâÃÂ
Goalie Alex Blankenburg moved to 5-0-0 on the season with the win, stopping 19 of 20 Wenatchee shots. Port Huron's defense provided plenty of help, blocking many shots in front of Blankenburg.
ÃâÃÂ
Nine NHL scouts representing seven teams were in attendance for Saturday night's win, and the Fighting Falcons did their part to impress each and every one of them in the hard-hitting game.
ÃâÃÂ
Sunday's matinee rematch would prove to play out much differently from Saturday's low-scoring, defensive battle. Port Huron's offense rolled to a 5-3 win, converting on three of five power play opportunities in the process.
ÃâÃÂ
Logan Lambdin netted a pair of goals, while Vito Aluia, Bryce VanHorn and Matt Seidel each added one of their own. Jonathan Kopacka, Alex Archibald, Bryan Yim, Joey Lindberg, Zach Badalamenti, Bryce VanHorn, Taylor Fernandez and Nick Horne all had assists in the high-scoring game.
ÃâÃÂ
Max Milosek earned his fourth win of the season while making a season-high 44 saves.
ÃâÃÂ
"We were able to accomplish a lot of what we had hoped to over the weekend," said Fighting Falcons Head Coach and General Manager Michael Gershon. "We're really starting to see our guys come together as a team to be successful.
ÃâÃÂ
"We've got two of the best goalies in the league, and they both proved that throughout the weekend," he added.
ÃâÃÂ
The Fighting Falcons improve to 9-2-2 on the season and 3-0-0 at McMorran Arena with two wins over the weekend. Port Huron holds a five-point lead over the second-place Johnstown Tomahawks in the North Division standings. The team currently leads the NAHL in goals (43), assists (73), points (116) and power play goals (14).
ÃâÃÂ
The team will get a rare weekend off before returning to the ice in Flint on Saturday, October 26 in search of their first road victory against the Michigan Warriors this season. The Warriors have handed the Fighting Falcons their only regulation losses this season in a pair of one-goal games at Perani Arena.
ÃâÃÂ
Nearly $300 was raised for Ãâàthe "Taking a Shot at Breast Cancer" calendar through 50/50 raffles over the weekend. The calendar is used to raise funds and breast cancer awareness, with all proceeds going to St. Clair County charities and under or uninsured citizens to undergo treatment.
ÃâÃÂ
Representatives from the "Taking a Shot at Breast Cancer" calendar are running a silent auction for pink Fighting Falcons warm-up jerseys, which the team will wear before their October 27 home game against the Michigan Warriors.
ÃâÃÂ
Karen Newman, the "Voice of the Detroit Red Wings," will sing the national anthem before the Fighting Falcons' October 27 home game.
