Two Shootout Losses over the Weekend

FRIDAY
Three periods of regulation and an overtime session were not enough to settle matters as the Bismarck Bobcats defeated the Brookings Blizzard in a shootout 4-3 (2-0 SO).
In a losing effort, Brookings was led byRuss Jordan, who racked up two goals in his first game for the Blizzard. Jordan scored the first of his two goals at 5:52 into the first period to make the score 1-1.Joe Natheassisted on the tally. Jordan's next tally made the score 3-3 with 3:48 left in the third period.Jared Goudreauprovided the assist.
The Bobcats were led byFilip Starzynski, who registered one goal. Starzynski scored on the power play 5:42 into the third period to make the score 3-2 Bismarck. A high sticking penalty onTrey Olsonhad put Bismarck on the power play.Nate Repenskyassisted on the goal.
The Bobcats' penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on three Brookings power plays. Bismarck kept the Blizzard's goalie busy throughout the game, andDrew Weigmanmade 28 saves on 32 shots.Huba Sekesialso scored for Bismarck.
Brookings relied on a core group of players for most of its offense, asConor Andrle, Jordan and Goudreau took 22 of the team's 40 shots.
Brookings additionally got points from Goudreau, who also tallied one goal and one assist. More assists for Brookings came viaJeff FlickerandNick DeCenzo, who each chipped in one.
The Blizzard could not find the back of the net during the shootout and Bismarck when home with the 4-3 vicorty.
SATURDAY
A similar game played out in Austin on Saturday night at the Riverside Arena when the Blizzard took on the Austin Bruins.
The Blizzard took an early 1-0 lead in the first period when Brandon Parker capitalized on power play opportunity just 2:37 into the game. Conor Andrle and Evan Hesse got the assists.
Despite being out shot 12-5 in the first period, Drew Weigman came up big for the Blizzard in goal and the headed to the locker room with a 1-0 lead.
Again in the second period, the Blizzard were able to get on the score board early when Russ Jordan scored his third goal of the weekend at the 2:18 mark. Trey Olso and Beau Michaud had the assists.
The Bruins would answer later in the period when Drew Anderson scored a short handed goal at the 5:38 mark and Jay Dickman finished a penalty shot at the 16:12 mark in the frame.
Neither team would score in the third period or overtime and for the second night in a row the Blizzard were headed to a shootout.
John Nitchen would score for the Blizzard on the team's third shot and after five shooters they were tied 1-1. Nick DeCenzo could not score for the Blizzard on the next shot opening the door for Brian Bachnak to win it for Austin.
Next up for the Blizzard is a home and home series with the Bismarck Bobcats. The Blizzard will host Bismarck on Friday, Oct. 18th for Ladies Night at the Larson Ice Center. Puck Drops at 7:15pm.
