Frisco Fighters News Release
FRISCO - Thanks to a gliding offensive effort at home Saturday night, the Frisco Fighters never trailed in a 54-37 win over the Quad City Steamwheelers.
Frisco (3-0) quarterback TJ Edwards capped an eight-play game-opening march by scoring untouched on a keeper from four yards out. Two plays after a missed field goal by the visitors, he lofted a 32-yard score to Devon McCoy that provided a 14-0 advantage early.
Quad City (1-2) got on the board with a Kyle Kaplan field goal before a minute had passed in the second frame, then Martez "Meatball" Carter punched it in from six yards out in his return to action. As a lead blocker on an option play, he helped usher Edwards from 32 yards out on the Fighters' following possession.
The Steamwheelers' Edward Vander replied to the former surge with one of his own and the latter with an aerial one-handed snag on a 16-yard touchdown reception. The second touchdown appeared to keep Quad City within two scores with 10 seconds remaining in the half, but Lionell McConnell returned the ensuing kickoff the length of the field to send the teams into the intermission.
Judd Erickson and Jordan Vesey connected for a 35-yard air strike 2:10 into the third quarter. Frisco stretched its lead again when Edwards faked a toss at the Quad City five and lobbed a pass to Cole Blackman.
McConnell added a third-quarter interception, setting Edwards up for his third rushing score on the night, another four-yard effort. Vander pulled in a second receiving score on 4th-and-5 to begin the final frame, inspiring his crew's defense to finally get its first stop shortly after.
Erickson hit Keyvan Rudd for a 21-yard passing touchdown that pulled Quad City within 10 with 6:34 to play. For good measure, Edwards pranced past the goal-line in a short-yardage situation with five ticks left.
The Fighters are off to their second consecutive 3-0 start. They won their first seven clashes a year ago.
