Fever Salute Indy Native and WNBA All-Star Katie Douglas

INDIANAPOLIS - With news that WNBA All-Star and former Indiana Fever star Katie Douglas has announced her retirement today, the Fever franchise offers a salute to Douglas with remarks from President and General Manager Kelly Krauskopf, Head Coach Stephanie White and former head coach Lin Dunn.

A former prep star at nearby Perry Meridian High School and an NCAA champion at Purdue, Douglas embarked on a 14-year pro career with All-Star accolades in the WNBA and overseas. She spent six seasons (2008-13) with the Fever and helped the franchise to the WNBA Finals in 2009 and its lone WNBA title in 2012. Douglas retires as the second-leading scorer in Indiana history, including a record 34 points in a single game in 2009.

"One of the historical highlights of our franchise is that Katie played here for six years," said Krauskopf, who orchestrated a trade for Douglas to return to her hometown prior to the 2008 season. "There's no question that much of our success is attributed to her being a member of our great playoff teams. She has been such an inspiration to many little girls in Indiana who dream of being the next Katie Douglas.

"I want to thank her for everything she has done for women's basketball," Krauskopf continued. "I wish her much success in the next chapter of her life.

"Katie Douglas is a champion, on and off the court!," exclaimed Dunn, who helped recruit her to Purdue and later coached her with the Fever.

Dunn added, "Given her parents' history with cancer, Katie has been a true role model for all those struggling with cancer. She has had an outstanding WNBA career - an All- Star, an All-Star MVP and a key part of a WNBA championship! I am so proud of all that Katie has accomplished on the court, but I'm even more proud of what a significant contribution she has made in the communities where she has played! I wish her only the best!"

"Obviously Katie was an exceptional player at every level and had a tremendous career," said White who teamed with Douglas in college and coached her as a pro. "There isn't much she didn't accomplish on the court. It was thrilling for me to win a championship with her in college and WNBA. As a friend, I hate to see her end her career because of injury, but her health and well-being are top priority. No matter what she chooses to pursue, I know she will be a success and I certainly wish her the best."

A WNBA playoff participant in 10 straight seasons and 11 times since 2002, the Indiana Fever have reached at least the conference finals seven times in the past 10 years - including WNBA Finals appearances in 2009 and 2012. Just two seasons ago, Indiana capped the 2012 campaign as the champions of women's basketball, beating the Minnesota Lynx in the WNBA Finals.
