July 14, 2014 - West Coast League (WCL)
Yakima Valley Pippins News Release
MEDFORD, Ore. - For the second time this season, the Yakima Valley Pippins have a West Coast League Player of the Week recipient. After Reed Garrett won the league's first award of the season, Vince Fernandez has earned this week's honor from the WCL.
Fernandez went 15-29 this week (Monday-Sunday) and currently finds himself in the middle of an eight-game hitting streak, in which he is hitting .500 (17-34) with 6 doubles, 1 triple, 1 home run, 12 RBI and 9 runs scored. The left-handed hitting outfielder had a game-tying two-run double in Sunday's 4-3 win at Medford.
Fresh off his first season at UC Riverside, Fernandez has been a consistent presence in the middle of the Pippins order this season. He leads the league in average (.402), is tied for fourth in home runs (4) and third in the league in RBI (28).
Pippins pitcher Nick Kern was also under consideration for Player of the Week honors after working three scoreless outings this week, while picking up two saves and striking out eight of the 10 hitters he faced.
Fernandez, Kern and the rest of the Pippins take on the Medford Rogues in the middle game of a three-game series tonight at 6:35 p.m.
