YAKIMA, Wash. - The honors keep rolling in for Vince Fernandez after a banner inaugural season for the Yakima Valley Pippins that saw them advance to the first round of the West Coast League playoffs. He was named a Perfect Game 2nd team All-American and garnered the title of "Top Prospect" in the WCL. Both awards were given out by Perfect Game USA.
"Vince is a special player that had a record setting summer for the WCL," Pippins Manager Marcus McKimmy said. "He was an everyday CF for us who could create offense with his bat and his legs. We are proud he was a Pippin and expect nothing but great things in his future."
Fernandez led the way offensively and held down the middle of the outfield for the Pippins after arriving in mid-June. In 50 games for the Pippins, he broke both the West Coast League's single-season home run (10) and RBI (51) records. Fernandez hit .350 with 26 extra-base hits and 38 runs scored hitting from the middle of the Pippins order most of the season.
"Vince was quite the fan favorite," Pippins General Manager Danny Tetzlaff said. "Not only was he fun to watch, but he interacted with our fans a lot, and that was neat to see."
The WCL named Fernandez its Most Valuable Player (MVP) earlier this summer while also being selected the WCL North All-Star team, where he represented the Pippins in the home run derby. Fernandez is currently a sophomore at UC Riverside.
