FC Tulsa Travels Down to Texas for Three Preseason Matches in Four Days
March 24, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
FC Tulsa News Release
TULSA - FC Tulsa is headed back to where the season ended last year to begin anew in 2021. FC Tulsa's preseason kicks off in Texas with a trio of matches over the next four days.
It begins with Tulsa's first match against MLS opposition since the 2018 preseason, as Houston Dynamo FC and FC Tulsa square off at 4 p.m. at Ellis Field at Texas A&M University. Coming off the best season franchise history, the club will continue to test itself against the top level of competition in the country.
Immediately following Wednesday's match against Houston, FC Tulsa will head east to Dallas for a two-match series with North Texas SC from USL League One on Thursday and Saturday. FC Tulsa last played the former League One champions in the 2020 preseason, winning 3-1.
ABOUT HOUSTON DYNAMO FC
Houston Dynamo FC began play in 2006 and saw immediate success. The club won the Audi MLS Cup in each of its first two seasons, earning spots in the CONCACAF Champions League. Dynamo FC were Audi MLS Cup runners-up in 2011 and 2012, and the club won a Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup in 2018.
ABOUT NORTH TEXAS SC
North Texas SC began play in 2019, and also saw quick success. The club won both the USL League One regular season title and USL League One Championship in its first season. The club was founded and is operated by MLS' FC Dallas, serving as the major league club's reserve team.
Here are some notes ahead of the three matches.
FORMER DYNAMO TRIO RETURNS
FC Tulsa boasts three former members of the Houston Dynamo FC organization in defenders Bradley Bourgeois and Kevin Garcia and midfielder Eric Bird. Bourgeois was signed by Houston as a Homegrown Player while Garcia and Bird each were signed to USL affiliate Rio Grande Valley FC and worked their way up to signing with Dynamo FC. This will be the first matchup against Houston for all three since they each left the organization.
TULSA VS. MLS
It'll be a historic moment when the whistle blows for kickoff on Wednesday as it will be the third time in franchise history that Tulsa has played a MLS club, and the first as "FC Tulsa." The Tulsa Roughnecks saw MLS competition twice, a 2-1 U.S. Open Cup defeat in 2017 to the hands of FC Dallas, and a 2-1 preseason loss to Chicago Fire FC in prior to the 2018 season. The last time Houston lost to a USL opponent was during the 2015 preseason when it suffered back-to-back 1-0 defeats to Charleston Battery and the now defunct Austin Aztex.
REMATCH WITH NORTH TEXAS SC
FC Tulsa will be back at Toyota Soccer Center to square off with North Texas SC on Thursday and Saturday. Last season, FC Tulsa won 3-1 in the preseason showdown, notching goals on either side of halftime including the game winner from Marlon Santos. It was a dominant performance that set the tone for FC Tulsa's 2020 campaign.
