FC Cincinnati News Release
FC Cincinnati have signed midfielder Yamil Asad to a contract through the 2024 season, with an option for 2025, the club announced today. Asad, 29, has scored 21 goals and added 26 assists in 122 MLS appearances with D.C. United and Atlanta United.
Asad spent parts of four of the past six seasons in the nation's capital with D.C. United. In 2023, he made 26 appearances across all competitions with the Black-and-Red, making nine starts including twice in the U.S. Open Cup, netting D.C.'s game-winning goal against Richmond Kickers in the third round.
"Yamil brings a great amount of experience and quality to FC Cincinnati," said Chris Albright, FC Cincinnati General Manager. "He's a creative and versatile player who will be a good fit with our group and I'd like to welcome him to the club."
Overall, Asad made 98 appearances for D.C. over three stints with the club, including 31 games played in 2018 with fellow countryman Luciano 'Lucho' Acosta. The duo combined on six goals together for the D.C. attack.
The San Antonio de Padua, Argentina native is a product of Club Atletico Vélez Sarsfield Academy and is the son of former Vélez Sarsfield player, Omar Asad, who won eight Argentina Primera División titles and one Copa Libertadores.
Asad made his senior debut for Club Atletico Vélez Sarsfield in April 2013. He scored his first career goal on Feb. 21, 2015 in a 2-1 win over Club Mutual Crucero del Norte. In total, the midfielder scored four goals and recorded five assists with Vélez Sarsfield in 57 matches.
In January 2017, Atlanta United acquired Asad on a season-long loan ahead of the Five Stripes' inaugural Major League Soccer season. Asad scored Atlanta's first goal in club history in their season opener on March 5, 2017 against the New York Red Bulls. He would total seven goals and lead the team with 13 assists in their inaugural season.
Asad joined D.C. United ahead of the 2018 season for his first stint with the club, where he scored the first goal in Audi Field history on July 14 against Vancouver Whitecaps. After returning to Vélez Sarsfield in 2019, he signed again with D.C. ahead of the 2020 season where he spent the next two years with D.C. In 2022, Asad joined Chilean side Club Deportivo Universidad Católica, where he made 20 appearances with the Primera División side.
