
Fayetteville's Dickens Earns Gatorade Call-Up to Clippers

GREENVILLE, S.C., January 10 - The Los Angeles Clippers signed Fayetteville Patriots forward Kaniel Dickens to a 10-day contract today, making him the third GATORADE Call-Up of the 2005-06 NBA Development League season and the 53rd overall since the league began play in November 2001.
In seven games (three starts) since signing with the Patriots on December 13, Dickens averaged 29.1 minutes, 12.9 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists. He converted 33-of-44 from the field (.446), 15-of-21 (.714) from the free throw line and 9-of-25 (.360) from behind the three point line.
The 6'8" Dickens signed with the Clippers prior to the 2004-05 season and averaged 3.6 points and 2.0 rebounds in five preseason games with Los Angeles before being released on October 28, 2004. After being released by the Clippers, he signed with New Jersey and averaged 1.1 points, 0.8 rebounds and 5.5 minutes in 11 games with Nets.
Originally selected by Utah with the 50th overall selection in the 2000 NBA Draft, Dickens made his NBA debut with the Portland Trail Blazers during the 2003-04 season and averaged 2.3 points, 0.7 rebounds and 4.0 minutes in three games.
Tulsa guard John Lucas III earned the first two GATORADE Call-Ups of the D-League season, signing with the Houston Rockets on December 29 when the team was granted a special exception from the NBA due to injuries. He was waived by the Rockets on January 4 and re-signed to a 10-day contract on January 8.
The NBA Development League includes the Albuquerque Thunderbirds (N.M.), Arkansas RimRockers (Little Rock), Austin Toros (Texas), Fayetteville Patriots (N.C.), Florida Flame (Ft. Myers), Fort Worth Flyers (Texas), Roanoke Dazzle (Va.) and Tulsa 66ers (Okla.).
The D-League offers players the opportunity to develop their talent in a highly competitive atmosphere under the NBA's umbrella. Thirty-six (36) players have been called up to the NBA on 53 separate occasions. Eleven (11) former D-League coaches, six athletic trainers, 14 referees and 30 front office executives have also been called up since the start of the league's inaugural season in November 2001.
