Fans Will Have Opportunity To Sway 2011-12 Brunswick News Rivalry Cup

MONCTON, NB - The Moncton Wildcats and Saint John Sea Dogs, in partnership with the Times and Transcript and Telegraph-Journal, have released the scoring details for the 2011-12 Brunswick News Rivalry Cup Challenge.

In addition to on-ice results and attendance, this year's challenge will feature two new ways for fans to affect the outcome: a Social Media Challenge and a food drive. The social media challenge will reward the team whose fans are most engaged on Facebook and Twitter, while the food drive is an important initiative that will benefits residents of both Saint John and Moncton.

The full scoring details are as follows:

On-ice record: one (1) point for an overtime or shootout loss, two (2) points for an overtime or shootout win, and three (3) points for a regulation win.

Attendance: based on game-by-game attendance numbers, one (1) point for 4000 or more fans, two (2) points for 5000 or more fans, and three (3) points for 6000 or more fans.

Social Media (Facebook and Twitter) Challenge: one (1) point per new like on each team's Facebook page, one (1) point per new follower on Twitter, and five (5) points per picture taken in hostile territory. The team with the highest total receives five (5) points toward the Rivalry Cup challenge.

Food Drive: The food drive in Moncton will take place on New Year's Eve, Dec. 31, while the drive in Saint John will take place on Jan. 2. The team gathering the most food by weight will be awarded three (3) points.

"The Rivalry Cup has been an exciting part of the Wildcats experience building on the rivalry with our interprovincial neighbor Saint John Sea Dogs" said Moncton GM Jeff Rose. "This year we look forward to adding two new components that directly tie the fans into the outcome. Facebook and Twitter will are becoming more and more important to connect with our fans and being able to reward them with prizes and advanced information. As well, supporting our community has been the mantra of this organization from the start, we are excited to be raising food donations at such a crucial time of need during the year. We would like to put a call out to all of our fans to help us take the trophy back to Moncton this year!!"

"This food raising support is both greatly needed and greatly appreciated" said Ben MacMichael, Manager of the West End Food Bank. "Use of our services has increased over the last year, with the families we help being younger in age with multiple children. This will be the boost we need as demand increases in the winter due to higher living costs. The West End Food Bank is very grateful to each individual donor, and to the Moncton Wildcats."

The announcement comes just in time for the season opener featuring the two contenders Thursday, Sept. 8 at 7 PM. Wildcats season opener will take place the following day Friday, September 9th at 7PM. Group tickets are still available! The Cats Cup ball hockey tournament and meet the team BBQ will take place the following day at the Moncton Farmers Market. Hockey starts at 9 and free community BBQ starts at 12.
