Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

SIOUX FALLS - The Sioux Falls Pheasants have opened online fan voting for the team's all-time best manager to head the 20th-Anniversary team.

Fans can vote once a day at the Pheasants' website, www.sfpheasants.com. Results will be announced on the next Throwback Thursday game, August 2, when the Pheasants host the Quebec Capitales.

The nominees are:

Doc Edwards (2000-2004) - A former big league manager with the Cleveland Indians, Edwards led the Sioux Falls Canaries to their first playoff appearance in 2001 with a club that produced three league all-stars and two eventual major league pitchers.

Steve Shirley (2007-) - Shirley, a former big league pitcher with the L.A. Dodgers, guided the Canaries to their only league championship in 2008 and third playoff appearance in 2010. He surpassed Doc Edwards in 2010 for the most wins in team history. He has shown a knack for signing talent, including thirteen league all-stars, a handful of former major league players and a two-time Player of the Year (Beau Torbert) and Pitcher of the Year (Ben Moore).

Frank Verdi (1993-1995) - A one-time member of the New York Yankees and long-time minor-league manager, Verdi was the club's inaugural manager in 1993. He guided the Canaries to their first winning season in 1994 and produced four league all-stars in parts of three seasons. Verdi died in 2010.

The 20th-Anniversary Team also consists of two starting pitchers, two relief pitchers, one catcher, a representative from each infield position, three outfielders and a designated hitter.

The Sioux Falls Pheasants are in their 20th season of independent professional baseball. Information about season tickets and group outings is available by calling (605) 336-6060 or visiting www.sfpheasants.com.
