Mississippi RiverKings News Release
SOUTHAVEN, Miss.âRiverKings fans and friends made the most of a charitable contribution on Sunday, Feb. 20, when teams bowled with the player of their choice during the 2nd annual "Kings of the Alley" event benefiting âKings With a Cause charitable club at Cotton Bowl Lanes in Southaven.
Fans were able to bid on their favorite player during a silent auction during the Feb. 17-19 three-game home stand at the DeSoto Civic Center. Bids covered one game of bowling and shoe rental for five friends and a RiverKings player. Any other interested fans were invited to come, hang out, and meet the team.
Kathy Franks and husband Jim bid on and won a bowling session with Stephen Margeson. They invited their friend, DeSoto County Circuit Court Judge Bobby Chamberlain and his son Will.
This is the Franks' first year as season ticket holders. The couple bid on the tickets at the House of Grace women's shelter charity fundraiser, the "Game Show Gala." They often bring the Chamberlains to hockey games as guests.
"We're really having a lot of fun," Franks said. "Stephen's a lot of fun to watch on the ice. We've really enjoyed going to all the games and being a part of all the activities this year."
Allan Carr paused between turns to give his thoughts on the event.
"It's good to be here because everyone here is a big supporter of the RiverKings program," Carr said. "All these people are behind us 100 percent every time we step on the ice or off. And the money goes to help charities. We're killing two birds with one stone, staying in touch with the hockey community and helping out some great causes at the same time."
âKings With a Cause (K.W.A.C.) was established in 2003 as a community-oriented club in which club members participate with the RiverKings organization in community and social events to aid non-profits and charitable organizations. The club also encourages RiverKings athletes to become involved in benevolent endeavors, like Parsons' Pledge and Ken Goetz's ticket donation and fundraiser program benefiting Ronald McDonald House.
Some events hosted by K.W.A.C. included the Annual Player-Waiter Dinner (benefiting Palmer Home for Children); a social dinner at McAlister's deli; and participation in the American Diabetes Association's Walk for America. All profits obtained from the operation of âKings With a Cause go to non-profit, charitable organizations.
Additionally, K.W.A.C. members have donated time, money and materials for players' charitable initiatives, such as crafts for children at Ronald McDonald House during team visits this year. Other K.W.A.C. members have donated money and unused tickets so Ronald McDonald House residents and their families could attend games this season.
"We're excited about making donations to the charities at the end of the season," Holbrook said. "We get involved with a wide range of organizations and interests, from Olive Branch Humane Society to N.M.S.A.R.C's Family Crisis Center to the players' charities. There's something for everyone."
