Lehigh Valley Steelhawks News Release

Bethlehem, PA: The Lehigh Valley Steelhawks (4-2) make the short trip across the Delaware River to face the Trenton Freedom (5-2) for the first time on New Jersey soil. The rival National Conference teams are familiar with each other after having faced off twice already this season in the Valley, the Steelhawks coming out on top in both. The Steelhawks begin a series of five straight away games. They enter Saturday night's kickoff looking for a win to end their current two game skid after starting the season off 4-0. This rematch will also be for first place in the National Conference with half the season remaining.

This Memorial Day weekend matchup features the league's top two scoring defenses, both teams giving up less than 41 points per game. Trenton's front five have recorded a league best 24 sacks, while it's Lehigh Valley's defensive backfield that has gotten them 11 interceptions. Head to head, Lehigh Valley has only given up four sacks to Trenton, but has picked off four of their passes.

Both teams have had success with their rushing game this season, each relying on both their fullback and their quarterback to be effective on the ground. Trenton's number two rushing offense (54.3 yds/g) utilizes FB Melik Brown (213 yds, 8 tds) and QB Warren Smith (161 yds, 6 tds). The number three rushing offense (46.7 yds/g) of the Steelhawks employs FB Jeff Link (141 yds, 4 tds) and QB Adam Bednarik (138 yds, 5 tds). All four of the above players are in the top six of all players rushing.

The athletic play of each quarterback has been influential in the success of both teams'. Smith and Bednarik are ranked third and fourth respectively in total offensive yards (Smith- 1,585, Bednarik- 1,288) and total offensive tds (Smith- 34, Bednarik- 24).

Fans can expect another tight game between these two teams. The rivalry is already fierce between the PA and NJ team. Things will remain heated as the Steelhawks make the short trip across the state border to play in Trenton with a 7:00pm kickoff this Saturday.

Check for score updates on the Steelhawks Facebook and Twitter accounts. The PIFL website and Facebook page should also have updates. The Steelhawks will be on the road for four more away games. Their next stop will be in Columbus, GA to face the Lions. They return to the Lehigh Valley for their final home game, and their 2014 PIFL regular season finale, for a June 28th matchup with rival Richmond Raiders. It will also be Fan Appreciation Night.
