Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, Mass. - Brockton 1B Melvin Falu moved into a tie for second-most home runs in the Can-Am League with a pair of dingers, but Pittsfield jumped out to an early lead and rolled to a 13-7 victory over the Rox in a Can-Am League tilt at Campanelli Stadium on Monday evening.
Pittsfield (1-0 second half, 21-27 overall) got things rolling off of Rox starter Wayne Lundgren in the first on an RBI single by RF Daniel Carte, a sacrifice fly by LF Rafael Cabreja, and a bases-loaded hit by pitch to C Scott Knazek to take a 3-0 lead. The Colonials then tacked on another two in the second on a pair of RBI singles from 2B Danny Bomback and Cabreja. Brockton scored a run in the second when RF Keith Brachold singled, moved to third on C Chris Grossman's single, and scored on SS Dominic Ramos' RBI fielder's choice, but Pittsfield responded with two two-run home runs by 1B Jerod Edmondson and Carte the following inning, making it a 9-1 game after three and moving Carte into the league lead with 10 dingers.
The Rox (0-1, 21-27) responded in the fourth with a pair of tallies on a run-scoring double by Ramos and an RBI single from 3B Derek Kinzler, but Pittsfield put the game further out of reach with DH Donny Leon's three-run blast in the sixth off of Rox reliever Jose Aquino, taking a 12-3 lead.
Brockton continued to claw back, responding with a run in its half of the sixth on Kinzler's RBI groundout before the Colonials immediately scored a seventh-inning run of their own when Edmondson tripled and scored on SS Matt Nandin's groundout. The Rox then made it 13-6 in the bottom of the seventh with 1B Melvin Falu's two-run blast; Falu later hit another solo shot in the ninth, tying him with teammates Brachold and Phillip Cuadrado for second in the league with nine.
Pittsfield's 13 runs and 17 hits were season-highs against Brockton pitching. Seven different Colonials players had more than two hits, with Carte and Edmondson both going 3-for-6. For the Rox, Falu, Grossman, Ramos and Kinzler each had a pair of hits.
Lundgren (6-3) took the loss and was roughed up in two and one-third innings of work, allowing seven runs on ten base knocks. Miguel Flores (3-3) picked up the victory, giving up four runs on six hits in six innings of work, fanning four. After dropping the final two games of the series at New Jersey on Friday and Saturday, Monday evening's loss marks the first three-game losing streak of the season for Brockton.
The two teams face off again on Tuesday night at 6:05 p.m., with Jon Venters (0-0) facing the Rox' Mike Smith (6-3), who goes for his league-leading seventh victory of the season.
