Falcons To Deliver Rob Murray Award

Springfield, MA - The Springfield Falcons, proud members of the American Hockey League, announced today that they will hand deliver the very first "Rob Murray Award" to the inaugural recipient, South Hadley High School senior Jeff Newsome. The presentation will occur on Monday, May 21 at 10:15 am at South Hadley High School and is open to the media. Former Falcons' captain, Rob Murray, will take part in the ceremony along with Falcons' vice president of business operations, Bob Oliver.

The "Rob Murray Award" was created in honor of the Falcons' former center, whose number 23 was retired by the Falcons on February 10, 2007. This special honor will go to a high school senior annually who best exemplifies the characteristics of leadership, dedication and hard work. Newsome played hockey for Holyoke High School and along with a plaque, Newsome will receive a $500 scholarship to utilize toward furthering his academic career at a college, prep school or other educational institution of his choice for the 2007-08 academic year.

Murray will be forever known as "Mr. Falcon." Murray possessed true leadership qualities and was respected by his fellow teammates, coaches and officials. Murray spent parts of eight seasons with the Falcons from 1994-2003 and along with John Stevens, was named one of the original co-captains of the Falcons in their inaugural season of 1994-95. The Toronto, Ontario native remains the Falcons all-time leader in games played (501), assists (157), and penalty minutes (1,531). Murray is second on the Falcons all-time list in points (218) and is fifth in goals (61). Murray concluded his playing career in Springfield during the 2002-03 campaign and on February 28, 2003, he became only the sixth player in American Hockey League history to play in 1,000 career games.
