Springfield Falcons News Release

December 16, 2007 - The Springfield Falcons lost to the Portland Pirates 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Cumberland County Civic Center in snowy Portland, Maine. The Falcons concluded their weekend in Portland with a record of 0-1-1-0 and will be off from game action until Friday in San Antonio.

"The guys battled hard tonight, you can't fault them for a lack of effort," said Falcons head coach Kelly Buchberger. "You had the feeling it was going to be a one-goal game, both teams had played three games in three days and we just didn't get the bounce we needed in the end."

After 40-minutes of scoreless action, the Falcons ended up on a power play early in the third period, but it was Portland that took advantage when Ryan Carter tallied a shorthanded marker at 1:06 of the third period. The goal held up as the game-winner as Springfield went 0-5 on the power play, while the Pirates were 0-8.

Springfield is now 2-1-1-1 in five games against Portland this season.

GAME NOTES

The game's first altercation occurred in the opening 20 minutes as Springfield's Ryan Flinn and Portland's Gordie Dwyer collected fighting majors.

The Falcons earned a point in the standings on Saturday night with a 4-3 overtime loss against Portland. Springfield twice held a two-goal lead in Saturday's contest.

Portland was covered in snow on Sunday like most of the Northeast and the inclement weather forced the Falcons to alter their travel plans. Springfield was originally scheduled to travel home after Sunday's game, but the team decided to leave Monday morning now instead.
