Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA â Due to an uncontrollable contamination of Poa Annua, a type of Blue Grass, the entire playing surface at Cheney Stadium has been removed and replaced. Poa Annua is a strain of grass that is common on golf courses, but is not conducive to the wear and tear that a baseball field must endure.
The replacement of the playing surface at Cheney Stadium began October 7, 2004 and took a total of nine days to complete. The process involved removing the old playing surface, leveling off the ground and installing sod over the entire playing surface.
The Tacoma Rainiers grounds crew had help from Country Green Turf Farms out of Olympia. Country Green has completed work at SAFECO Field and also has taken part in previous projects at Cheney Stadium. The crew at Country Green Turf Farms oversaw the growing of the new sod, the removal of the old sod and the installation of the new sod. Cheney Stadium's new playing surface is made up of 80% blue grass and 20% rye grass.
Country Green Turf Farms continually grows sod for the upkeep of the playing surface at SAFECO Field. "I am impressed with the work of the staff at Country Green and am looking forward to the 2005 season," stated Tacoma Rainiers head groundskeeper Ryan Schutt.
The city of Tacoma granted money for the updating of Cheney Stadium, and the replacing of the field is only the first phase. New seats will replace the wooden reserved seating section later in the off season.
The 2005 Tacoma Rainiers season begins Friday, April 15, 2005 with a 7:05 p.m. game against the Fresno Grizzlies. Season tickets are currently on sale and individual tickets will go on sale March 1, 2005. Contact the Tacoma Rainiers at 253.752.7700 or visit www.tacomarainiers.com.
