Extreme Topples Sioux City For Division Lead
April 29, 2008 - United Indoor Football Association (UIF)
Bloomington Extreme News Release
The Bloomington Extreme hung on Saturday for a 53-49 United Indoor Football victory at Sioux City to improve to 4-4 and take over first place in the Eastern Conference. The victory marks the first time Bloomington has owned the conference's top spot this season.
Facing a 49-46 deficit with just over five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, the Extreme marched down the field on a 4-play, 38-yard drive that culminated in a 22-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Dusty Burk to wide receiver Derin Graham.
The Bandits (3-4) were left with 3:11 to score a touchdown, but had their hopes crushed when Extreme defensive linemen Jeff Candler and Quince Holman sacked quarterback Chad Kapanui on third down.
Bloomington defensive back Dion Brown then broke up a fourth-and-long pass attempt to thwart the Sioux City threat and ensure the Extreme's fourth consecutive Eastern Conference victory.
The contest featured a close battle throughout. After leading the majority of the first half, the Extreme took a 23-17 lead into halftime.
Sioux City quickly jumped ahead within the first two minutes of the third quarter when running back Johnny Bentley scored a touchdown on a 1-yard run. The lead change would mark the first of eight in the second half.
Bloomington was able to keep up with Sioux City's frequent trips to the end zone largely because of the play of its quarterback.
Burk continued the torrid pace he left with before injuring his throwing hand in the first half of the Extreme's week 6 win at RiverCity.
The 6-foot-1 gunslinger picked apart the Bandits defense for 228 yards and five touchdowns and led the Extreme's ground game with 26 rushing yards and one touchdown.
James Walton, the leagues top wide receiver, also had a stellar game and continued to improve on a career year. He extended his scoring streak to four games by grabbing six passes for 118 yards and three touchdowns.
Quince Holman led all defensive players with nine total tackles, including seven solo and four assisted. He also remained atop the UIF leader board by recording 1.5 of his 5.5 sacks.
The Extreme will look to remain in sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference when it hosts RiverCity Saturday at 7:05 at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.
