Express Hire Tony Jones as Interim Head Coach
July 14, 2015 - National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada)
Windsor Express News Release
(WINDSOR, ON) The Windsor Express Basketball Club introduced it's interim head coach for the 2015-2016 season on Tuesday at the Windsor Star News Cafe. Tony Jones, older brother of VP Basketball Operations Bill Jones, was named to the role.
The announcement comes after Bill Jones was suspended from coaching by the league for one year following the pre-game incident before game 7 of the NBL Canada finals on April 30, 2015.
Tony Jones arrives to the Express with an impressive coaching resume. He has spent nearly 20 years at the collegiate level in assistant coaching roles with the University of Auburn, University of Tennessee and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee amongst others.
Jones saw much success while at Tennessee, guiding the team to the NCAA tournament in each of his six seasons there coaching along side Bruce Pearl.
During Jones' 6 year tenure on the bench at UT, the school averaged 24.2 wins and won three SEC Eastern Division championships. The 2008 team captured the overall SEC title outright for the first time in 41 years, won a school record 31 games and earned the first No. 1 ranking in school history.
"To be able to coach a team, at the professional level, thats won back-to-back championships, is a privilege and an honour," said Jones. "I'm not naive, I have some huge shoes to fill, but my goal is to put together an enthusiastic staff and players with one aspiration, to three-peat."
When asked what brought him to Windsor, Jones responded, "I was excited for the chance to be with my brother. We haven't been together for a year in over 25 years." He also stated, "The opportunity to coach at this level may lead to future head coaching options, either professionally or back at the collegiate level."
President Dartis Willis had this to say about hiring Jones, "The one thing I look for is passion. The thing that really attracted me to what he's done is that they (Tony and Bill) had the same mentors and they have the same coaching philosophies."
Jones will be on hand to meet fans at the Commissioner's Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, July 16th at the WFCU Centre (Restaurant). That event goes from 6-7pm and all fans are welcome!
