Windsor Express News Release
Windsor, ON- The Windsor Express returned home to take on the Orangeville A's Wednesday at the WFCU Centre.
Before the game it was announced that guard Jeff Remmington had been released after just one home game and three games overall with Windsor. Taking his place on the roster and starting in his Express debut was former Oklahoma Sooner forward Juan Patillo. Also returning to the starting lineup Wednesday was long time Express point guard Darren Duncan who had been sidelined with a leg injury all season.
It took Windsor nearly three minutes to record their first basket of the game. Newcomer Juan Patillo was fast to contribute to his new team, getting the team's first two points on a 2-on-1 fast break opportunity. Maurice Jones played the majority of the first quarter in relief of Duncan and was able to beat the buzzer with a layup to end the first quarter. Windsor missed too many easy opportunities while trailing in the second quarter, including several missed shots inside the paint. Nick Evans was on fire from mid-range, hitting a flurry of elbow jumpers. Well on their way to a double-double were Evans and Warren Ward who each had ten first half points to contribute to Windsor's 45-37 lead.
The Express found themselves in foul trouble early in the third quarter which allowed Orangeville to creep back into the game. A 13-3 run midway into the third quarter led by Orangeville's Rahlir Hollis-Jefferson and former Express guard Alex Johnson allowed the A's to regain the lead. Windsor responded with a 15-7 run of their own and quickly regained the lead. Bringing the crowd to their feet was Wally Ellenson who came off the bench, caught an inbounds pass and hit a half-court buzzer beating three to close out the third quarter.
Orangeville was matching three for three to begin the fourth quarter. In the midst of a 17-7 run Orangeville's Justin Moss mad multiple poster-worthy dunks. With under one minute to play, Windsor trailed by three, following a pair of successful DeAndre Thomas free throws. Windsor got the defensive stop it needed and rushed the ball up the court to their leading scorer, Warren Ward. In an attempt to send the game to overtime, Ward fired up a fast break three and the ball rattled off the rim and failed to touch nylon. Wally Ellenson's second chance layup opportunity was also unsuccessful, forcing Windsor begin fouling.
Windsor dropped this game to Orangeville 97-92. This moved Windsor's record to 4-10, their worst start in franchise history.
Five Windsor players scored in double digits, including DeAndre Thomas, who had 21 points and 6 rebounds.
The Express will go for their fifth win when they take on the Moncton Miracles Friday, February 3, 2017 at the WFCU Centre. Tip off is 7:00 PM.
