Round Rock Express News Release
ROUND ROCK, Texas - Tommy Mendonca's one-out solo homer kick-started a four-run second inning as the Frisco RoughRiders edged the Round Rock Express 4-3 in Tuesday night's exhibition game at The Dell Diamond. It was the final exhibition game for both teams, the two highest affiliates in the Texas Rangers farm system.
Consecutive doubles from Endy Chavez and Chris Davis in the bottom of the first gave the Express the game's first lead, but it did not last long. Mendonca sent Brett Tomko's 0-1 offering well beyond the wall in left to tie the game. Renny Osuna and Jose Ruiz followed with consecutive singles before Jose Felix put the RoughRiders ahead with an RBI groundout. Ruiz later scored on a wild pitch, and David Paisano capped the frame with an RBI single.
Frisco used five pitchers to make that lead stand and held off an eighth-inning Express rally. Craig Gentry delivered a one-out single and scored on Taylor Teagarden's RBI double. With two outs, Chavez reached on an infield single, and Teagarden scored on a throwing error by Frisco third baseman Jonathan Greene. However, Fabio Castillo struck out Chris Davis to end the inning and the threat; it was Castillo's third strikeout of the inning.
Tomko took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits and a walk over 4.0 innings. Zach Jackson worked 3.0 scoreless innings on one hit with two strikeouts, while Zach Phillips and Yhency Brazoban each worked a scoreless frame with one and two strikeouts, respectively.
RoughRiders starter Miguel de los Santos allowed a run on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts over 3.0 innings; he also hit a batter and had one wild pitch. Carlos Pimentel was credited with the win, working around a hit and five walks in 3.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Ben Snyder worked a scoreless inning before Castillo's one frame, and Adalberto Flores earned the save with a perfect ninth.
Chavez recorded Round Rock's lone multiple-hit game, going 2-for-5. Ruiz had Frisco's lone multiple-hit game as he was 2-for-2 with a walk.
Round Rock opens the 2011 season Thursday, hosting the Iowa Cubs for the first of four games at The Dell Diamond. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. CDT. Southpaw Michael Kirkman gets the start for the Express opposite Iowa right-hander Thomas Diamond.
