Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

Burlington, VT- Edgardo Baez did something Tuesday night at Centennial Field that no other New York-Penn League player has ever done in Vermont's 11-year history and it helped the Expos to a 5-4 victory over the Stedler Division-leading Tri-City ValleyCats. After Tri-City had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Baez drilled a 3-2 pitch over the centerfield wall for his second home run of the season. It was the first-ever Centennial Field home run ball to go over the portion of the centerfield wall that is painted green with no advertising. After the Baez homer, Vermont got a single run in the third before Brad Ditter delivered a two-run single in the fourth inning that gave the Expos a 5-1 lead. Expos starter Chris Goodman came out of the game in the fifth inning with two runners on and one out, but Francisco Sandoval got a flyout and groundout to squelch the ValleyCat rally. Tri-City did score three times in the seventh inning off Sandoval, but two of those runs were unearned. The ValleyCats had the tying run on second with one out, but first baseman Steve Mortimer made a great catch on a foul ball over near the Expos bullpen and Sandoval got Kevin Vital on a groundout to end the inning. Ben Cox came on in the eighth inning in relief of Sandoval (2-1) and allowed just one hit with two strikeouts over the final two innings for his first save. Ben Zobrist was 4-for-5 with a run and Drew Sutton was 3-for-5 with a run for Tri-City (9-3), while Evan Englebrook allowed five runs (four earned) over four innings for the loss. Catcher Devin Ivany had two hits in his first game with Vermont, while Doug Vroman and Ofilio Castro both had a hit and a run for the Expos. The two teams will wrap up the quick two-game series at Centennial Field on Wednesday night with Steven Cook, Montreal's 25th round pick in 2004 out of UNC-Asheville, making his first start for Vermont. Wednesday night is Superhero Night at the ballpark and fans are encouraged to come dress as their favorite superhero, while a trip to Universal Studio in Orlando, Florida will be raffled off during the game.
