BURLINGTON, VT --- Andrew Pinckney went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI and Barry Hertzler tossed six strong innings to lead the Lowell Spinners to a 5-2 victory over the Vermont Expos in New York-Penn League action Friday night at Centennial Field.

The Spinners got on the board in the first inning scoring two unearned runs with the help of two Expos errrors. Pinckney had an RBI single in the first inning to give Lowell a 2-0 lead and then added another RBI single in the fourth inning for a 3-0 lead.

The Expos got single runs in the fifth on a Jose Contreras RBI single and in the sixth on an RBI double from Steve Mortimer to cut the lead to 3-2. Vermont had a chance to tie the game in the sxith when Luke Montz followed the Mortimer double with a blooper to centerfield, but Lowell's Matt Van Der Bosch raced and made a great diving catch to keep the Spinners lead at one.

Lowell quickly restored its three-run lead with unearned single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. Heriberto Guzman scored on a wild pitch in the seventh inning and Chris Jeroloman scored in the eighth on an RBI triple from Chris Turner.

Hertzler (4-3) allowed two runs on four hits with three walks and seven strikeouts over six innings for the victory, while Tom Cochran picked up his third save of the season with three hitless innings for Lowell (31-44).

Clyde Jenkins (2-3) allowed four runs, but only one earned, over his six-plus innings to take the loss, while Brett Campbell gave up an unearned run in three innings of work.

With just one game remaining in the season, the loss Friday means that the Expos (34-37) will finish with a record below .500 for the fourth straight season and seventh time in the last eight years.

Vermont wraps up the 2004 season at 7:05 p.m. Saturday night with a single game against the Lowell Spinners. The Expos will be holding their annual Jersey Auction before and during Saturday night's game with all proceeds going to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
