Expos Doubled up by Renegades

BURLINGTON, VT --- Hudson Valley took advantage of wildness on the part of Expos pitchers as the Renegades beat Vermont 8-4 in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at Centennial Field.

Four Vermont pitchers combined to walk 12 Renegade batters, including five hitters in a four-run second inning for Hudson Valley. The Renegades got just two hits in that second inning and then scored two runs in the fourth on no hits and three walks to take a 6-0 lead.

Expos starter Anthony Pearson (0-4) tied a Vermont team record with eight walks as he allowed six runs on just three hits over the first 3.1 innings. Pearson tied the walk record set August 28, 2002 by Jason Norderum at Mahoning Valley.

Renegades starter Scott Vandermeer (2-2) allowed two runs on three hits over five innings for the victory. Gabby Martinez was 2-for-5 with a run and RBI for Hudson Valley (11-10), while Aneudi Cuevas was 1-for-3 with two runs, two RBI and his first home run of the season.

The Expos got a pair of runs in the fifth inning on a two-run double from Ja'Mar Clanton to cut the Renegades lead to 6-2. After Hudson Valley scored an unearned run in the top of the sixth, Kory Casto hit a solo home run in the bottom of the inning, his second home run of the season.

Vermont had a chance to get closer in the sixth when with runners on first and second, David Lutz lined a shot over rightfielder Matt Rico's head. But Salomon Manriquez got a bad jump off second base and weas thrown out at the plate for the second out of the inning and keep the Hudson Valley lead at 7-3.

Josh Whitesell was 2-for-4 and Jason Tuttle was 1-for-4 with a run and a double for Vermont (3-19), which outhit the Renegades 10-7 for the game. It marked just the second time in 22 games this season that the Expos have reached double figures in hits for a game.

The two teams will play game two of the three-game series at Centennial Field on Thursday night beginning at 7:05 p.m with Nick Long on the mound for the Expos. The first 500 fans through the gates will recieve a free stress ball.
