OTTAWA - For one day, Lynx Stadium might as well be Jarry Park or the Olympic Stadium. The Ottawa Lynx present the Gowlings Tribute to the Expos, presented by the National Capital Amateur Athletics Association, Sunday, July 22nd.
Five Expos alumni will be at Lynx Stadium to help the Lynx honour Canada's first Major League Baseball team: Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd, Warren Cromartie, Delino DeShields, Claude Raymond and Rodney Scott.
The five former 'Spos will sign autographs for Lynx fans and will team up with local media personalities to play a three-inning baseball game at Lynx Stadium before the Lynx July 22nd game against Norfolk. Their opponents will be nine lucky fans who buy their way onto the team through an online auction at: http://search.ebay.ca/search/search.dllfrom=R40&_trksid=m37&satitle=play+against+former+expos&category0=.
The game is open to the public and starts at 10:45am.
Young baseball fans can sign up for a baseball clinic with Warren Cromartie Thursday, July 19th. The clinic for kids 14 and under runs from 10am 12 noon and costs $20 or $22, including a ticket to Sunday's game. Space is limited to the first 100 kids registered. Oil Can Boyd, 47, joined the Expos in 1990 after eight seasons with Boston. Boyd went 16-14 with a 3.15 ERA in 50 starts with Montreal in 1990 and 1991. Over his 10-year career, Boyd went 78-77 with a 4.04 ERA with Boston, Montreal and Texas.
Warren Cromartie, 53, spent almost all of his 10-year career with the Expos. He made his Major League debut with the Expos in 1974 and was a fixture in the Olympic Stadium outfield by 1977. Cromartie hit .280 with 60 HR and 370 RBI in nine seasons in Montreal, including a career-high 14 HR and 70 RBI in 1980. He played in Japan from 1984 to 1990, returning to the Majors in 1991 with Kansas City.
Delino DeShields, 38, spent his first four Major League seasons with the Expos before being traded for Pedro Martinez in 1993. He finished second in National League Rookie of the Year voting in 1990. He hit .277 in his four seasons in Montreal, with 23 HR and 181 RBI and 187 stolen bases. He went on to play 13 Major League seasons with Montreal, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Baltimore and the Chicago Cubs.
Claude Raymond, 70, played with the Expos in their first three seasons, 1969-1971, making him the first Canadian to play with a Canadian Major League team. At that point, Raymond was in his 10th Major League season. He went 8-16 and 24 saves out of the Expos bullpen. Raymond went on to be a coach and a broadcaster for the Expos. He also played with the Chicago White Sox, the Milwaukee Braves, Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves.
Rodney Scott, , spent parts of five seasons with the Expos between 1976 and 1982. Scott hit .226 and drove in 115 runs for Montreal and also played for Kansas City, Oakland, the Chicago Cubs and the New York Yankees over his eight-year Major League career.
