Erie Explosion News Release
(Marion,OH)- The Erie Explosion fell to the Marion Blue Racers by a score of 22-21 in a tightly contested defensive struggle between two of the top teams in the CIFL. Marion (4-1) handed Erie (3-2) its second consecutive loss after the Explosion put together a 15 game winning streak over two seasons. Erie overcame the loss of starting quarterback Aaron Smetanka and a stagnant offense in the second half with a stout defense that put the Explosion in position to kick a field goal to win in the final seconds of the game. Kicker Shon Rowser saw his 32 yard field goal attempt strike the low ceiling of the Marion Coliseum as time expired to seal the win for the Blue Racers who sit atop the South Division. Erie previously defeated Marion this season by a score of 43-23 on February 16th at the Erie Insurance Arena.
Erie started the game strong by taking a 21-14 lead into halftime on the strength of two touchdown runs by Nate Burney and a highlight reel 38 yard touchdown reception by Gannon University product Evan Twombly with 6 seconds left in the first half. The Explosion turned in their best defensive performance of the season in limiting Marion to 182 total yards. Erie received a boost by the return of linebacker Jon D'Angelo who had 12 total tackles, 1.5 sacks, and 2 interceptions. Maurice Jones added an interception in the 4th quarter for the Explosion who clung to a 21-14 lead until late in the fourth quarter when a touchdown pass from Nez Mincey to Bryson Lawrence and a 2-pt conversion put Marion ahead for good. Erie will return to the Erie Insurance Arena on Sunday March 16th to take on the Bluegrass Warhorses with kickoff scheduled for 2 pm.
