Sioux City Explorers News Release
SIOUX CITY, IA - The Sioux City Explorers announced earlier today that they have acquired the rights to OF Paul Weichard from the St. Joe Blacksnakes. Weichard played in the American Association All-Star Game last night in Sioux Falls as a member of the Blacksnakes and joined the X's prior to leaving for St. Paul earlier this morning. In order to make room for Weichard, the Explorers released RHP Isaac Daniels.
"I am so proud of my ownership and organization, who at this point in time knows that we have a chance to go for it," said Explorers manager Ed Nottle. "They have gone out and acquired someone who can absolutely help pull this off. "I realize we're only 11-2 and that's a lot of games from winning the second half, which because of our poor first half numbers we have to do, but I've never been more proud of an organization that says let's go for it as I am at this moment. Paul Weichard in the middle of our lineup means so much."
Weichard, 27, began his professional baseball career in 1997 when he signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks. As a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates organization, Weichard eventually made his way to double A in 2002 with Altoona. Prior to the start of the 2007 season, Weichard signed with the St. Joe Blacksnakes. In 35 games with the Snakes, Paul posted a .313 batting average with 4 doubles, a triple, 3 homeruns, and 23 RBI's. He is also 7-for-7 in stolen base attempts this season. In last night's all-star game, Weichard went 1-for-3 at the plate and played 5.0 innings in centerfield.
Weichard plays all three outfield positions along with first base. He is a resident of Melbourne Australia.
