Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Harlingen, TX - First half champion Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (49-43, 20-22) starter Kenny Evoniuk (3-3) followed up his one-hit shutout of the Alexandria Aces with a two-hit eight-inning masterpiece in which he struck out a career-high nine Edinburg Coyotes (41-51, 16-26) in a 4-2 victory tonight at Harlingen Field.
It's the fourth time this season the WhiteWings have swept a series, the second time it was a four-game sweep, and the first time in the second half.
Ryan Fox put the WhiteWings on the board in the first by extending his single-season home run to 23 against Isaac Daniels (1-2) with Miguel Peguero aboard and two outs.
The Coyotes got their first hit against Evoniuk in the fourth when Amado German led off with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Nelson Teilon sacrifice fly to make it 2-1 WhiteWings.
The WhiteWings got that run back in the fifth when Alejandro Martinez singled and Kevin Griffin was hit by a pitch. Ericnardo Padilla bunted the runners into scoring position and Bub Bergstrom hit a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.
The Coyotes got their second hit and run in the eighth when Adam Bonner led off with a double and moved to third on a wild throw. He scored on a Cameron McGuire ground out to make it 3-2.
The WhiteWings got an insurance run in the eighth when Sam McLain hit a one out double and scored one batter later on a Fox RBI-single.
Derek Bennett picked up his fourth save in as many days, his 22nd of the season with a scoreless ninth.
The WhiteWings head to Laredo for the first of three tomorrow night at 7:30. Julian Williams (6-4) is expected to face Juan Jimenez (1-3).
