NAHL Johnstown Tomahawks

Evola Helps Lead Hawks Past Generals for Series Sweep

January 31, 2021 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Johnstown Tomahawks News Release

The Tomahawks completed the three game weekend series sweep against the Northeast Generals by a score of 3-1 Sunday afternoon. Sam Evola played strong in net for the Tomahawks, allowing only one goal on 26 shots.

Birthday boy Max Neill would open the scoring for the Tomahawks Sunday afternoon, netting his fifth goal of the season 9:03 into the 1st period with the assists going to Jared Gerger and Holt Oliphant. With a little over five minutes to go in the period, Northeast's Matthew Sutter would get sent to the box for the first penalty of the game. Jay Ahearn took advantage of the opportunity netting his NAHL leading 17th goal of the season on the power play, with the Xth goal for the Ahearn-Clark-Gelatt line this weekend against the Generals. The Hawks would gladly take their two goal lead into the 2nd period with their momentum they have been carrying all weekend.

The 2nd period would begin with a goal from Tomahawks forward Reed Stark, as he received a beautiful pass from one of the newest Tomahawks, TJ Koufis to extend the lead for the Hawks. The assist would be the first point for Koufis since joining the Tomahawks roster. Frustrations were beginning to show for the Generals who hadn't seen the back of the net yet on Sunday afternoon as the game made a physical switch, with more pushing and shoving coming into play. Northeast's Tyler Cooper and Johnstown's Brendan Clark would sit for two minutes during the middle frame, but Stark's goal would be the only for the 2nd period.

Northeast's Alexander Tertyshny would get called for tripping 6:48 into the period, but the Hawks would not be able to convert on the power play opportunity to extend their lead early in the 3rd period. We wouldn't see much action until 13 minutes into the period when Tyler Cooper would score for Northeast on a penalty shot to put the Generals on the board late in the game. With 6:36 remaining in regulation Johnstown's TJ Koufis and Northeast's Jayden Jensen drop the gloves to give the fans a bit of excitement before the game ends. The two would be sent to the locker rooms a few minutes early as they would receive fighting majors and misconducts. The Generals pulled their goaltender Anton Castro in a late attempt to score another goal or two, but 3-1 would be the final in today's matinee game.

The Tomahawks head out to New Jersey for a Thursday night game against the New Jersey Titans on February 4. The game will be available on HockeyTV along with updates on social media.
