Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
The Waterloo Black Hawks locked up a berth in the USHL Clark Cup playoffs and the Dubuque Fighting Saints claimed the league's regular season championship, the Anderson Cup, during a 4-3 Waterloo shootout win at the Mystique Ice Center Friday.
Zach Stepan scored the only shootout goal in the second round, snapping a low wrist shot past the stick side of Arthur Brey. Cal Petersen made the conversion stand up, turning away all three Dubuque chances. His shootout effort came on top of 39 saves during regulation and overtime, one shy of his career-best. The victory was the Hawks' 17th road win of the year, setting a new franchise record.
The Saints had taken the first lead of the game at 10:48 during a power play. A fortuitous bounce out of the left wing corner left John Stevens with an open net after Petersen had gone behind the goal to play a puck which never got there. However, Brandon Salerno helped tie the game at 17:57. Fishing a rebound off the right wing boards, he went to the top of the circle for a shot which was tipped in by Mike Huntebrinker in the slot.
The Black Hawks took an edge 32 seconds into the second period. Taylor Cammarata patiently waited near the top of the right wing circle and once traffic congregated near the top of the crease, he fired a shot past Brey. The Saints tied it on their second power play goal of the evening, jabbed in at the end of the advantage by Jeff Taylor. However, Waterloo took the lead to intermission. Following a successful penalty kill, J.T. Stenglein's turnaround shot went wide, but sprang back to Vince Hinostroza off the end wall for a tap-in between Brey and the post to his right.
With 2:49 remaining in regulation, the Saints scored the goal which forced overtime. The rebound marker for Dylan Gambrell pushed the game beyond 60 minutes, giving the Saints the one point they needed to claim the Anderson Cup as regular season champion and also the Prairie Farms Cowbell Cup for the three-team series between Dubuque, Waterloo, and the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.
The last two home games on the 2012/13 regular season schedule are up next for the Black Hawks. Waterloo hosts the RoughRiders Saturday at 7:05 before the home finale versus the Des Moines Buccaneers Sunday at 3:05. Saturday, 500 lucky fans will receive a free t-shirt from Next Generation Wireless, and Sunday is the final College Night of the year presented by iWireless, with discounted tickets for all college students in attendance.
