GREENVILLE, S.C. _ Brett Evert held Birmingham to an infield single over the first seven innings, leading the Greenville Braves to a 6-2 Southern League victory over the Barons Sunday afternoon.

Evert , a 22-year-old right-hander who won three games for the G-Braves last April but finished 5-8, limited the defending Southern League champions to a fifth-inning, two-out infield single as the G-Braves gained a split in the four-game series. The Oregon native faced 23 batters and allowed only four balls to reach the outfield. Evert (1-0) walked one batter and struck out five.

Josh Tillery worked the last two innings, yielding two unearned runs in the ninth, in a game played in just two hours, one minute.

The G-Braves backed the solid pitching with early run support. A home run by Richard Lewis opened the scoring in the first inning; Adam LaRoche singled, went to second on a double by Cory Aldridge, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bill MCarthy to make it 2-0.

Ryan Langerhans and Lewis belted back-to-back doubles in the fifth, giving Greenville a 3-0 lead off Bimingham starter Dennis Ulacia (0-1). McCarthy's home run into the wind in right field made it 4-0 in the sixth. The G-Braves combined two hits, two walks and a sacrifice fly to score two more runs in the seventh.

The G-Braves play at home again Monday, when a 7:15 p.m. game opens a 3-game series with the Chattanooga Lookouts. Right-hander Ramon Colon will start against Chattanooga lefty John Koronka. The first 1,000 fans get a free G-Braves baseball and the first 500 fans will receive a free Miracle Hill Piggy Bank.
