Evansville Thunderbolts News Release
EVANSVILLE, IN - The Evansville Thunderbolts continued their winning ways on the road this morning as they defeated Mississippi Riverkings, 6-5, in overtime. The win positions Evansville in sixth place in the SPHL. Evansville has been on a steady climb in the standings since winning on the road against Peoria on Nov. 26.
The Thunderbolts were the first to score when Phil Bronner got the puck past Riverkings' netminder, Brad Barone, with 9:47 left in the first frame. But the Riverkings struck back, scoring twice in the period, when Tyler Barr and Dillan Fox, respectively, both got shots past Mike Doan.
Riverkings opened the second period on fire as Anthony Conti quickly got a shot past Doan's right side, putting Mississippi up 3-1. Ryan Patsch scored on Barone during a Thunderbolt power play to narrow the Riverkings' lead to 1. With just under 10 minutes left in the period, the Riverkings went on a power play after a Josh Elmes' penalty. But Josh Harris was able to score on a shorthanded breakaway goal to tie it up at 3-3. However, the Riverkings' Cullen Bradshaw was able to notch another goal on their third power play of the game near the end of the second frame.
Neither team slowed down as the third frame began. Mississippi capitalized on another Thunderbolts' penalty, extending their lead, 5-3. Brad Bourke answered back scoring on Barone to narrow the lead to 5-4 less than one minute after the Riverkings' goal. With 7:07 left in the game, Elmes fired one past Barone to tie it up at 5-5 and force overtime. Both teams lit up the other's goalies, but Doan and Barone stood strong for most of the overtime period, until Justin MacDonald found an open shot, winning it for the Thunderbolts.
