JUPITER, FL- Who said the ball doesn't travel at Roger Dean Stadium.
On a night that the Palm Beach Cardinals and Daytona Cubs combined for seven homeruns, Cardinals right fielder Terry Evans ended the homerun derby with a blast over the right centerfield wall, giving the Cardinals an 8-6 victory in ten innings.
Evans went 3-for-5 on the night, with two homeruns and three RBIs. "With every pitcher throwing about eighty percent of their pitches away from me, I was looking for something to drive the other way", Evans said. "I've been working on opposite field hitting from the start of Spring Training and it's really paying off." Evans is currently 7-for-9 in the series against Daytona. "During the top of the inning, I was standing out in right field knowing I'd have a chance to win it next time up."
The Cardinals (13-7) fourth inning provided a team record with three homeruns. Evans, Joe Mather and Tyler Greene all took Daytona starter Matt Weber deep to left field. Weber finished the game allowing six hits and four runs -three earned, in five innings.
Daytona's (8-12) offense was led by first baseman Matt Craig, going 3-for-4 and scoring two runs. Craig hit his first homerun of the season off of Cardinals' starter Eric Haberer.
Haberer lasted only five innings, giving up three runs on six hits. "That's the toughest five innings I've ever thrown", Haberer said after the game. "Every hitter presented a battle out there."
Closer Mike Sillman (2-0) worked the tenth inning picking up the victory.
Cubs' reliever Stephen Bronder (0-1), who just flew into Palm Beach International airport an hour before the game, picked up the loss.
