Seattle Sounders FC News Release
SEATTLE, Wash. - Brad Evans scored his fourth goal of the season as Sounders FC (15-8-6, 51 points) drew, 1-1, with the New York Red Bulls (15-9-7, 52 points) Sunday night on the Xbox Pitch at CenturyLink Field. Seattle extended its unbeaten streak to seven games (5-0-2) and has not lost in its last 14 (10-0-4) home outings.
Sounders FC remains one point behind New York in the Supporter's Shield standings and is tied with Real Salt Lake atop the Western Conference. With 29 games played, Seattle has two games in hand on both teams.
Seattle earned a penalty kick in the 44th minute when Evans' cross was handled by New York defender Markus Holgersson in the box. Evans converted the penalty for his fourth goal of the season, converting all seven career penalty attempts.
Tim Cahill equalized for New York in the 76th minute with a strong finish to the far netting after a prolonged scramble in the box.
Sounders FC out-shot the Red Bulls, 15-8, had 21 open-play crosses to New York's 10, and held 61.1% of the possession.
Forward Eddie Johnson was dangerous throughout the match, creating a game-high three chances. In the 26th minute, Mauro Rosales' free kick found Johnson for a header in the box that bounced wide. In the 38th minute, Lamar Neagle laid the ball to Johnson in the box for an open shot that was saved by a diving Luis Robles. Two minutes later, Johnson beat Robles to a loose ball on the left edge of the box, then crossed to Martins for an open-net header that bounced just wide.
Red Bulls hit the woodwork twice on a series of set pieces just after the hour mark. First, Holgersson hit the crossbar with a header after a free kick from David Carney. Minutes later, Fabian Espindola hit the far post on a deflected header after a corner kick.
Sounders FC returns to action next weekend with a road matchup against the Colorado Rapids. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. PT at Dick's Sporting Goods Park and will be broadcast nationally on NBC Sports Network.
