West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps have added another big name to the Major League Home Run Derby. Former Detroit Tiger Darrell Evans will headline the event along with Former Chicago Cubs Ryne Sandberg and Andre Dawson. The Home Run Hitting Contest, sponsored by Pepsi and D&W, will precede the 03 Midwest League All-Star Game, presented by Bissell, on June 17 at Fifth Third Ballpark.
Evans played for the Tigers from 1984 to 1988. During those five seasons, he hit 141 home runs and knocked in 405 RBIs. In 1985, Evans led the American League in home runs with 40. Throughout his entire career, which spanned 21 seasons, Evans racked up 414 home runs, 1,354 RBIs and batted .248. Besides the Tigers, Evans played with the Atlanta Braves and San Francisco Giants.
The Home Run Derby will also include a special Home Run Hitting Contest. The contest will take place during the Home Run Derby and will offer one lucky fan the chance to hit a $100,000 home run. The Home Run Hitting Contest grand prize winner will receive hitting instruction from former Whitecaps Manager Brent Gates. He or she will then step up to the plate and try to hit one out of the park. A successful attempt will fatten the grand prize winner's bank account by $100,000; everyone else in the park will win a Pepsi product at D&W Food Centers. Other prizes in the contest will include Bissell Power Glide vacuums, D&W gift certificates, Pepsi products, the chance to be an honorary "Bat Dad" for one of the celebrity athletes and autographed baseballs.
